Mineralnye Vody

Mineralnye Vody is a town in Stavropol Krai, Russia, located along the Kuma River and the main rail line between Rostov-on-Don and Baku.

The town serves as a gateway to Caucasian Mineral Waters. It has an airport connecting the town with some other major Russian destinations as well as some international destinations.

Within the framework of administrative divisions, Mineralnye Vody serves as the administrative center of Mineralovodsky District, even though it is not a part of it.

Mount Elbrus, the highest mountain in Russia, is also the highest mountain in the Caucasus Range in southern Russia near the border with Georgia. It is considered an inactive volcano. It last erupted around 50 A.D.

Mount Elbrus with 15,554 feet (4,741 meters) of prominence is the tenth most prominent mountain in the world. It has two summits with the West Summit at 18,510 feet (5,642 meters) slightly higher than the East Summit at 18,442 feet (5,621 meters).

Elbrus is a major centre for mountaineering and tourism in the Caucasus region. In 1956, when Elbrus was in the Soviet Union, a group of 400 climbers ascended the mountain to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Kabardino-Balkaria, the regional Soviet Republic.

The distance between Mineralnye Vody and Mt. Elbrus southern foot is 250 km. In order to get to Mt. Elbrus you need to arrive to airport Mineralnye Vody. There are daily direct flights from Moscow and Saint-Petersburg.

From Mineralnye Vody it is about 3-4 hours driving to Terskol – the last town in the Baksan Valley at the foot of Mt Elbrus. There are no regular public buses from Mineralnye Vody to Terskol, so it is necessary to rent private transport with driver. Private transport is available at the airport in front of the arrivals section. There is no certain place you can find private transport near the railway station. If you plan to travel by train it is better to order transport picking up you at the railway station in advance.
